Hey Russel! Thanks for setting up the board! Great idea! You blog was fabulous!
I just ordered the W1, as we previously had the full service arrangement from Vivint back in North America.
Once of my concerns with the W1 is, whether you can arm/disarm the unit just by pushing the button or wether there is any other security barrier that prevents someone from doing it that easily?
Thanks, Chris

Hey Chris,
Thanks for appreciation.
If you mean pushing one of those buttons on the W1 unit. No they are just for helping you attached devices and connecting the wifi.
If there is any security risk to aware of it is: W1 connects from your house, through the internet to Secrui Servers (probably in china) where you account sits. You have no idea how secure their server is or know any thing about the company.

Hey Russel!
Just tested my W1. All is fine. Don't think that is actually a security feature.
As an example: typically you would have your panel close to the door you typically use to leave/enter the house a especially prior to the 'app' days. However for the W1 it wouldn't be the best though as there is no code/authentication required to disarm.

I mounted my bracket to the ceiling so it is upside down and a little out of reach and also made it easy to drill small hole in the ceiling and neatly poke through the power cord.

That is actually not a bad idea. Because hiding doesn't make sense either or at least reduces the effect of the built-in siren.

You could hide it, if you bought a roof mount indoor siren and bound it too W1. There is also an option in the APP to turn off the internal siren on W1 which would really allow you to hide W1. I have visions of if my house does get broken into and the internal siren is going off that person will get a chair or broom stick and try and get W1 down so they can break it or put it in pillows. Those internal sirens that you mount on the ceiling are so hi pitched, apart from making blood come out your nose, you can't actually work out where the noise is coming from because it is everywhere.

I can confirm that depressing the middle button on the W1 does disarm it, even after the alarm has triggered.

My W10 app has a setting called "Lock Key". It seems to prevent the button press on the base unit from changing the arm on/off/home state ... which is pretty much what you are looking for.
Have not tested this while an alarm was in progress, but I suspect it will prevent that as well.
